A Dark Dystopian Tale of Debt, Ownership and Desire - 12 Pages
I. - REPLACED
In the late-morning city, the loading lanes were always the most conspicuous feature. Down the center of the street, in a channel cut into the pavement, a team of three women moved as one, their bodies gleaming with sweat as they hauled a SlaveHaul freight cart bearing the company logo. Nothing covered them below the waist except black steel straps cinched tightly around their thighs; above, they wore little more than the regulation lattice of harness straps crossing their shoulders, breasts, and collarbones, supporting numbered metal plates that flashed as they moved.
Around each woman’s neck was an ownership collar bearing her owner’s name and identification number. The first woman still had fresh red pressure marks across the bridge of her nose where the strap of the stainless-steel bit ran; on the second, the strap crossed an old callus along her cheekbone. On the third, the metal bar seemed to trace the shape of a missing smile across her face as she stared at the ground, swallowing with every step to endure the steel cutting into the corners of her mouth.
Martin Hale—and every pedestrian moving alongside him—instinctively kept three paces away as the team passed. A SlaveHaul inspector walked beside them, monitoring average speed, pulling force, and performance ratings on a tablet; from time to time he reached out and tapped one of the sweating shoulders with a finger, or, walking beside the rear shaft, ordered the team to pull straight. From the pavement beside the loading lane, Martin found it difficult to tear his eyes away from the muscles shifting along the backs of the women’s thighs, from their calves, from the steel bands around their shackled ankles clanging sharply with every stride. The sexual charge of the spectacle was unmistakable, and yet the world surrounding it radiated perfect indifference. Nobody paid them particular attention, nobody openly stared; everyone simply went about their business as though the three bodies were nothing more than draft animals or another component of the city’s transportation infrastructure.
Martin tried not to stare, but his gaze kept returning to the lead woman’s hips, where digital displays ran along either side of her waist belt: “Cargo 34-08, Unit 12, Owner: Kimura LLC, Rate: 62/h.” She was probably somewhere in her twenties, but reduced like this to a purpose—naked, enclosed in metal, the cold brutality of the bar across her mouth—only the load and the pale salt trails running through the transparent sheen of sweat seemed to matter. The woman at the rear glanced up at him for a moment. There was neither accusation nor shame in her eyes, only an endless, weary practicality.
Martin checked the time on his phone. The meeting began in ten minutes, and the logistics center was just around the corner. Among his messages, one incoming subject line flashed red: “IMPORTANT.” His hand trembled as he opened it. “Dear Mr. Hale, we hereby inform you that your employment has been terminated effective today. Reason: organizational rationalization, suspension of manual fleet operations, complete transition to alternative traction solutions. Further details are attached.”
The whole thing was impossibly cold, as though the decision had been made weeks ago and the company had merely waited until Martin had become completely irrelevant to it. He did not open the attachments. He knew what they meant: all the expertise on which he had built the last twenty years of his life had suddenly been erased by a single terminating email. He watched the three women in harness struggle up the next incline, biting down on their bits, ownership codes flashing beneath their wet hair. Instead of self-pity, he felt only emptiness—and the realization that this was what they had made of his profession as well: three naked women hauling freight.
A moment later, his phone vibrated again. A notification appeared on the screen: “Elena (Financing Asset),” with the amount of the monthly installment automatically displayed beneath it. The bank added a brief warning: “Notice: in the event of late payment, repossession of the product is automatic.” Martin’s first reflex was to dismiss the notification. Only then did he stop to think about what the word “product” meant. And what “repossession” meant. The message was less unexpected than the first, yet he wanted to erase it even more. “Dear Mr. Hale, the next installment for Asset 74-118, currently registered as your property, is due. Please review your financing status using the attached link.”
Martin’s fingers followed the instruction almost of their own accord. Elena’s file opened on the screen: year of birth, classification, condition, authorized parameters of use. The bank immediately displayed the amount, followed by another sterile line: “Owner authority: full. Asset recovery may commence within 30 days.” Elena’s face appeared beside it in the latest profile photograph: clear skin, dark, hard eyes, the faintest trace of sarcasm at the corner of her mouth, and around her neck the black-steel ownership collar with “HALE” glowing white across its face.
Martin’s thumb trembled. Slowly, as though every movement now counted twice, he read through the information again. “I am the owner of a multipurpose female asset,” he said silently to himself. And even as he formed the words, he understood that within thirty days he might lose everything. Including the one person who mattered.
Another team was already approaching along the street: two men and a woman, all three equally naked, all three biting down on the same suffocating metal held taut inside their mouths. The woman was visibly struggling. The inspector shouted at her. Her knees struck the pavement, but the harness kept her from falling; instead she folded inside it like a worn-out tool that no longer fitted its mechanism. Martin watched as they hauled her upright, and within seconds the cart was rolling smoothly again. Nobody said a word. Nobody suggested that any of this was abnormal.
For the first time, Martin felt that everything he had lost, and everything that was coming next, would somehow resemble this: naked, held taut in steel, darkly humiliating. And only one question remained in his mind, beating louder and louder with every passing second: how was he going to make Elena’s next payment?
II. - WORKING OFF THE DEBT
At home, the air felt different from the air outside: sweetish and dusty, carrying everywhere the scent of bodies and warm flesh, while the afternoon light spread across the carpet through the darkened window. Elena stood beside the table in the living room, completely naked, as she was every day. Her dark hair had been pulled into a tight braid, and the skin at the nape of her neck was slightly reddened beneath the collar. Her collar was thinner than most, made of black steel, its QR code engraved so deeply that it seemed designed to remain visible forever, in any light. Elena always knew how to stand: one hip slightly to the side, her left foot behind the other, her arms resting naturally beside her thighs. She was graceful, every movement polished. So was her expression: attentive, serene, faintly mocking. Water was boiling in the kitchen, its scent filling the room.
Martin stood in the doorway and watched Elena sorting spices on the counter. He did not want to speak. He simply stood there, looking at the harness marks on her back, left there that morning and still not wiped away. Every movement of her body was visible: the muscles shifting as she leaned forward, the delicate curve of her ribs, the firmness of her thighs, the natural, lazy weight of her breasts resting against her rib cage.
Elena sensed his gaze. She turned slowly. Her eyes were dark, but not hard.
“Home?” she asked quietly.
“Home,” Martin said, but he did not come any closer.
There were marks around Elena’s wrists as well. That morning they had even joked about fitting the restraints with a lock so she would not forget whom she worked for. Now, standing before him like this, there seemed to be something perfectly natural about her appearance: naked, traces of restraints on her skin, the code at her throat, pale heated lines left across her body by the owner’s harness.
“What happened?” Elena asked. Her voice was not unfriendly, merely too direct, as it always was.
Martin sat down on the sofa and closed his eyes, letting her scent wash over him. “They fired me.”
Elena said nothing. Only the faint hiss of the kettle could be heard.
“When?”
“Effective immediately,” Martin said.
“And how long can I stay?” she asked, her voice still calm.
Martin looked up at her. “Thirty days. According to the bank.”
The words seemed to land between them like something dropped onto the carpet.
Elena nodded. She switched off the kettle, prepared two mugs, then came closer and sat beside Martin. The mug was hot, steam immediately curling around her fingers. Elena asked nothing more. Martin took out his phone and automatically opened the application, which displayed the financed product’s status as soon as it launched. Elena knew the page. Every morning she was expected to look at it, to know what she was worth, how much remained to be worked off, and what would happen if the requirements were not met.
“How much?” she asked softly.
Martin tapped the screen. “‘Unused earning potential: 2,600 per day.’” There was something bitter in his voice, perhaps closer to disgust. “They’re offering to place you with SlaveHaul. At least until I find something else.”
Elena gave the slightest shrug, the skin over her shoulder blade rippling with the movement. “I assume saying no isn’t really an option.”
Martin leaned closer, his eyes dropping to her thigh. “No.”
For the first time that evening, Elena smiled. “All right. Then I’ll be ready tomorrow morning.”
Martin placed a hand on her shoulder and ran it across the warm skin stretched over the muscle beneath. Elena’s lips trembled slightly, but she did not move away.
“It could be tonight,” Martin said quietly.
Elena looked at him for a long moment, her gaze dark. “Which cart do I belong to?”
“We have to go to the center. They assign you there.” Martin tried not to think about how vulnerable she had become—or rather, how much more vulnerable she had become. He stood and nodded toward the bedroom. “Do you want it now?”
“Now,” Elena said, asking nothing else.
Everything in the bedroom was where they had left it. The harness lay across the chair, the straps on the shelf, the ankle and wrist restraints inside the drawer. With practiced movements, Martin fitted the belt around Elena’s waist, followed by the shoulder straps and the narrow black leather encircling her thighs. Elena helped him with her fingers; she knew exactly what every strap was for and how tightly each one had to be drawn to remain both secure and wearable. Martin looked over her. Every time, there was something new and perfect about the way the harness divided the surface of her body, emphasizing her hips, breasts, and shoulders. Elena was not ashamed of her nakedness, yet that first movement always contained the faintest trace of modesty, as though each time she had to learn again that she was not supposed to cover herself.
Martin stepped behind her and ran his fingers along the strap following her spine, then fastened the restraint attached to it around Elena’s wrist. The click was sharp and cold, ringing in the air. The scent of sweat on her body mixed with leather; the metal was cool against her skin at first, already warming where it touched the hollows of her body. Martin picked up the bit and studied the shine of the chrome steel for several seconds before stepping in front of her.
“This is new,” he said quietly, almost apologetically.
Elena looked up. “I can show you that I know it,” she said, parting her lips so he could slide the bar easily into place.
The cold metal touched the corners of her mouth first, then Elena slowly closed her teeth around it. The curve of the bit settled against her mouth, the straps meeting behind her head until it seemed as though another kind of collar had appeared across her face. Martin lingered for a moment over the steel held between Elena’s lips, then traced the line of her cheek with one finger.
She watched him from the corner of her eye, obedience mingling with self-mocking endurance. Martin took hold of her shoulder and seated her on the edge of the bed, then moved behind her, slowly and patiently checking every buckle and every strap. There was an unspoken meaning in the ritual: from tomorrow onward, the system would have a claim on this image of her too. She would no longer be described only as his lover, but as merchandise capable of earning a return.
Elena tensed her muscles slightly beneath each touch, as though testing the harness. The bit reduced her responses to muffled sounds, and the charged intimacy between them became a temporary refuge from what waited outside the apartment. For a while, neither of them had to speak about SlaveHaul, the bank, or the thirty-day deadline. They could pretend that the steel and leather belonged only to their private world rather than to the machinery of New ShackleTown.
Later, Martin lay close beside her, his hand moving gently through her hair.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
Elena did not answer. Her eyes were closed, her face peaceful, and the tension was slowly leaving her body. Martin listened to her breathing until they both understood that none of this had solved anything. It had only given them somewhere to hide for a little while.
The next morning, Martin took Elena to the SlaveHaul center. She did not even need to be freed from her household harness before entering; the receptionist gave her a quick glance and motioned for her to follow. Elena looked down at herself. Her body still carried traces of the previous night: marks along her thighs and ankles, and a thin reddish abrasion at the corner of her mouth where the bit had rested. In the reception area, dozens of other women were already waiting in line, likewise naked, their bodies patterned with the distinctive geometry of harnesses. Some were slim, some muscular, some fuller, some older and some younger, but all of them faced the same future: cart, load, strain.
A man stood behind the assignment desk, his face expressionless and his voice mechanical.
“Name?”
“Elena. Hale.” She pronounced it slowly, almost as though tasting the name.
The man tapped at his tablet. “Owner?”
“Martin Hale.”
The administrator looked Elena over, then gestured toward her fitted harness. “Remove the household harness.”
Elena stood silently while Martin loosened the straps. His hand trembled when he reached the waist belt, but Elena merely smiled at him. Nobody at the center paid them particular attention; the procedure was treated as one of the most ordinary things in the world.
The work harness was heavier and more rigid than the one they used at home. Steel rings ran along either side, the shoulders were reinforced with stiff washable material, and the rear carried a complete attachment system for coupling the body to the cart shaft. One of the women behind the desk fitted it to Elena with quick, efficient movements, measuring her waist, thighs, and shoulders as she worked before entering the harness number on a digital display.
The mouth bit was mandatory here as well. It was removed from sterile wrapping and placed into Elena’s mouth in a single practiced movement, the strap drawn tight behind her head. Martin watched the metal settle into position until speech was no longer practical.
Her shift appeared beside the assigned number: “Cargo 17-04, Owner: M. Hale, Rate: 32/h.”
The team supervisor looked at Martin. “They leave in ten minutes. You can collect her at the terminal.”
Elena stepped into line behind two other women. All three stood in the same disciplined posture, their bodies carrying the unmistakable impression of something inspected, measured, and approved every morning. Martin could not tear himself away from Elena. He kept watching her eyes, but Elena did not look back. It was almost as though she no longer belonged to him. She had surrendered her body to the procedure, but not her gaze.
They were led to the carts. The three women took their positions, and the attachment points at the backs of their harnesses were coupled to the common shaft. Their breathing came strained around the bits. The supervisor inspected the leader first, then the other two, raising their arms and checking the fit around their hips to make certain none of the harnesses restricted them incorrectly. Then he signaled. The cart creaked, lurched forward, and the three women began to run in perfect synchronization.
Martin watched from the side. Elena’s thighs tightened with every stride, her shoulders reaching forward beneath the load as her body settled into the rhythm of the harness. Beneath the metal, her expression remained unreadable. The street into which they disappeared no longer seemed like the city Martin knew. It was colder, more mechanical, and yet there was something disturbingly beautiful in the precision of their movement. Martin felt jealous and proud, resentful and unbearably sad all at once. Then the three bodies, three harnessed waists, and three identical sets of ankle straps vanished around the corner.
Only after they were gone did Martin notice that his hands had clenched into fists.
At the end of the day, the application allowed him to follow Elena’s performance: how many kilometers she had run, how much freight she had moved, how quickly the deliveries had been completed. The statistics were cold and sterile: “Shift completed. 18.3 km. 480 kg total load. 8 hours 11 minutes. Completed unit value: 246.68.” After deductions, a ridiculously small amount remained, yet the system immediately displayed another message: “Installment covered. Next payment: 29 days.”
That evening Elena emerged silently from the shower. Red harness marks still crossed her skin, there was an abrasion on her thigh, and the damp line left by the bit was still visible at the corner of her mouth. Martin did not know what to say. She was exhausted and beautiful, but her body seemed to carry something home with it now: the color and smell of the metallic world outside. Elena stood in the middle of the room, water dripping from her hair onto the floorboards, the ownership collar at her throat reflecting the yellow lamplight. Martin looked at her and, for the first time, truly felt that he might lose her.
His phone vibrated.
The bank had sent another message: “Exhibition Avenue — Premium Placement. Estimated revenue: 6×. Further details available.”
Martin did not want to open it, but curiosity was stronger. He tapped the notification. Elena’s body had been assigned another hourly value, this one shockingly high, and a single control could enable the “Display” authorization.
Elena saw the screen and gave a quiet, exhausted laugh.
“At least now we know what I’m worth,” she said, without a trace of sadness in her voice.
Martin simply looked at her and nodded.
And in that moment, he already knew what he was going to choose.
III. - PREMIUM ACCESS
Exhibition Avenue was the strangest street in the city precisely because it fitted so perfectly into everyone’s world that its brutality was almost invisible. Martin and Elena arrived in the early evening light. Elena wore her usual walking restraints: a leash, her hands secured behind her back, shackles around her ankles. Illuminated cages, restaurants, bars, and renovated old buildings lined both sides of the avenue. Ornamental trees stood at regular intervals along the pavement, separated by slender black lampposts that cast discreet bands of bluish light across the paying crowd. It was never truly packed, but the flow of people was constant: couples, corporate groups, clusters of tourists, a few solitary men, and at least as many confident, curious women.
Elena noticed the difference before they had even passed the corner. Beneath the smells of freshly brewed coffee, grilled food, and flowers, there was an unmistakable scent of warm bodies in the air. It was not foul or particularly harsh; it reminded her more of a zoo—the mingled presence of many bodies, hormones and heat, a little salt, a little hair. It drifted from the caged displays. Martin watched Elena as her eyes moved along the rows. There was something like mocking amusement in her expression, but anxiety lay beneath it, as though she were pretending none of this mattered while every nerve in her body searched for some clue to what would happen next.
The first display was a simple glass-fronted booth with a digital sign beneath it: “LIVE ASSET DEMONSTRATION.” A woman stood inside, naked except for several dark straps and the illuminated code at her throat. Her hair was cropped short, her skin pale, her breasts small but firm. Her hips had the definition of someone accustomed to training, and a bright trail of sweat ran down one thigh toward her knee. Her face remained completely still, her eyes staring blankly through the glass. Beside her, a smaller screen read: “Owner: B. Fuchs / Rate: 23/h / Free interactions: Visual, Conversation.” Beneath that was a QR code through which her complete profile could be retrieved in seconds.
Two pedestrians stopped. The woman said nothing; the man smiled directly at the displayed woman and remarked aloud, “Worth it. Look at her posture.” His companion glanced at the woman, scanned the code with her phone, and then the pair continued on their way.
Elena spoke only a moment later, when Martin was already about to move on.
“It’s really that simple?” she asked quietly. There was neither astonishment nor disgust in her voice.
“Apparently,” Martin said, trying to sound like someone seeing all of this for the first time.
There were two people in the next display, both men, both dark-skinned, their heads shaved completely bare, wearing nothing but narrow harnesses. One sat on the floor with his back against the wall; the other gripped a metal rail beside him and stared at a group of laughing teenage girls on the opposite pavement. At the bottom of the digital display, a line flashed: “Owner: Urban BodyRent. Rate: 19/h / Free interaction: Touch (non-genital), Conversation, Photo.” An older man approached the bars, reached through and ran a hand along the standing man’s upper arm while speaking to the other as casually as though he were examining furniture or testing a tool.
Elena moved closer to Martin now, though not from fear or embarrassment. She studied the pair in the neighboring display with the detached concentration of someone trying to decide how authentic a performance really was. Martin felt her body settle against his side; had they not been walking through one of the city’s most elegant districts, there would have been hardly anything between their skin.
The third display had perfectly transparent glass, but dark metal bars had been installed behind it, making the enclosure look simultaneously like a prison and something strangely private. A woman sat on the floor inside with her legs folded beneath her and her hands cuffed behind her back. Her hair had been gathered into a loose knot so that the illuminated code at her neck remained completely visible: “S. GELLERT / Asset: F64-112 / Owner: Ind. Zrt.” Her face was beautiful in an almost classical way, but her eyes were utterly empty. Between her breasts was a small, fresh tattoo bearing the company logo.
Two teenage boys stopped outside the bars. One laughed loudly, then called in, “Lower your head so we can see the code.”
The woman obeyed without a word, exposing the engraved identification at the nape of her neck. The two boys examined the image on one of their phones, pointed things out to each other, then moved on.
“They don’t even look human anymore,” Elena said.
Martin did not answer. The atmosphere of the avenue changed step by step as they walked farther into it. The deeper they went, the more displays there were, the stronger the scent of bodies became, and the more digital screens and nakedness surrounded them. The central section was the most intense. Every second window seemed to contain women on display, bodies of every imaginable shape, yet all of them shared the same basic condition: they waited naked and restrained for visitors, sometimes wearing nothing but a collar, sometimes fitted into elaborate yokes and harnesses. Most carried illuminated ownership codes. Their bodies bore marks from the morning’s restraints or working harnesses; sweat shone on their skin. Some women had been arranged in carefully chosen poses, like dancers or athletes, while others simply knelt with their hands held behind their heads.
Most pedestrians merely looked at the displayed bodies and continued walking, but some stopped to study the details more carefully. A phone could immediately retrieve a profile, the owner’s identity, and the interactions permitted for that particular person. If someone caught a visitor’s interest, an authorized interaction could be purchased with a single gesture: conversation, permitted touch, or, where the profile allowed it, more intimate services. Payment passed automatically to the owner and the transaction was immediately recorded by the system.
Martin’s phone vibrated in his pocket. A new notification from the Avenue administrator informed him that their reserved display space was ready. Elena turned and looked at him questioningly.
“Do you really want to try this?” Martin asked, though there was little conviction in his voice.
“Why not?” Elena said with a smile. “It’s not as if we could become much less free.”
The digital address automatically plotted their route. Display Number 19 opened from a narrow, darkened reception area accessible through a short corridor. Only two members of staff were present, both elegantly dressed women who moved with the effortless authority of people entirely in control of their surroundings. Elena walked down the corridor with Martin behind her. One of the women approached and gave a brief nod, her voice pleasantly formal.
“First time?”
Martin nodded.
“Please remove her personal restraints. We’ll take care of the rest. You can modify permissions on site. All services are billed by the minute, although during the first hour the system permits display and conversation only.”
Elena positioned herself for the restraints to be changed as casually as if she were standing in her own bathroom. The attendant efficiently removed the existing hardware, updated the digital strip on Elena’s collar, then fitted a heavy metal restraint around her wrists and secured it to an anchoring point inside the booth. Her hair was brushed back so that the code at the nape of her neck remained completely exposed. Elena did not look at Martin once. When they positioned her in the center of the display, Martin studied her: the strength in her thighs, the almost translucent fineness of the skin above her ribs, the slow and regular rise of her breasts, and the faint strap marks that remained visible even in the evening light.
“Shall we activate the display?” the attendant asked Martin.
“Yes,” Martin said.
The screen changed immediately: “Asset 74-118 (Elena, Owner: M. Hale). Interaction: Display, Conversation. Rate: 76/h.”
With a soft click, the lighting shifted. The floor began to glow, while muted golden light spread through the walls. Elena stood in the center, her arms held behind her by the restraints, and only one large white word now shone across her collar: “HALE.” Seen from outside, the entire room resembled a futuristic terrarium.
Nothing remarkable happened during the first fifteen minutes. Several pedestrians looked in from the street, scanned Elena’s profile code, and a few tapped lightly against the barrier. Most simply stared for a while, exchanged a few words, then continued walking. Eventually, paying visitors began to appear. The first was a young woman, perhaps around twenty, who approached the glass, studied Elena for a long moment, then initiated a short conversation.
“Can I ask what it feels like?” she said.
Elena tilted her head. “Strange. As if somebody else were doing the feeling for me.”
The young woman smiled. “You’re beautiful. Does that matter?”
Elena nodded. “Yes.”
The woman watched her for a few seconds longer, then walked away. Martin’s phone chimed as the system registered a small credit.
The next visitor was a middle-aged man who approached and immediately began examining Elena’s body.
“Can I touch you?” he asked, although the display clearly stated that conversation was the only interaction currently permitted.
“For now, you’ll have to use words,” Elena replied, and for the first time a trace of sarcasm appeared on her face.
The man laughed. “Is it always this basic?”
Elena looked directly at him. “I’m not a car. You don’t order me with optional extras.”
For a moment, the man had nothing to say. Then he gave a defiant shrug and walked away.
Over the next two hours, so many notifications reached Martin’s phone that he could barely keep track of them. Some visitors spent a long time talking to Elena about her body; others wanted only to know her age. Some asked what it had felt like the first time she had been displayed publicly. One middle-aged couple wanted to know whether she had ever given birth and whether she might someday produce a slave child. Another couple asked surprisingly personal questions, but whatever they asked, irony never entirely disappeared from the intelligent slave woman’s replies.
The most humiliating, and at the same time the most surreal, moment came when a man stepped up to the display and asked through the screen, “May I take a closer look at your genitals?”
At first Martin assumed the system would not allow it, but “Visual Detail” was included in the conversation function, so Elena simply turned slightly to one side and parted her legs enough for the man to examine her. As he looked, he ran a finger slowly along the bars as though tracing it across her skin. The man smiled and said only, “Thank you. Perfect.” A tip immediately appeared on the display as well, a two-digit amount suggesting that the visitor intended to return later for a real physical encounter.
From time to time Elena glanced at Martin, though never for more than a moment. Martin was beginning to understand what it meant to watch a woman admired as property and yet still desired as a woman. He was jealous, but at the same time oppressively aroused. During the final hour, almost every passerby seemed to stop. A small crowd gathered in front of the display, everyone staring at their phones as Elena’s profile appeared in the system.
At the end of the evening, the staff announced that it was closing time. Martin approached the door and watched as the attendant unlocked the restraints holding Elena’s arms and helped her step out of the cage. The scent of bodies mingled strangely with the digital glow. In the corridor, Elena looked at Martin for a long moment before saying simply, “You know there’s no going back from this.”
Martin nodded.
The screen showed the evening’s earnings. They were six times what Elena could have made during an entire day at SlaveHaul.
They were almost ready to leave when another notification appeared: “EXTRA DISPLAY — A premium client is offering a substantial surcharge for one hour of physical access. Accept?”
The question seemed to hang in the air. Elena looked at Martin, and Martin could do nothing but tap ACCEPT.
For the rest of the night, Martin stood across the street, watching from the balcony of a bar as Elena remained inside Display 19, completely naked, the ownership code still visible at her throat while the premium client made use of the access Martin had authorized. Only one or two visitors remained outside the cage now, both solitary men. One watched Elena intently throughout the encounter; the other made no attempt to conceal his own arousal as he watched. At first Martin wanted Elena not to look back at him, but with a single glance she found him across the neon-lit street.
Nothing in the world around them had changed. The lights continued to flicker, the crowd gradually thinned, and the city simply carried on as it always had. Martin knew that, in truth, he had already lost everything. Yet at that moment he felt with absolute clarity that nothing had ever seemed more completely his than the thing he would now have to learn to let go.
