For a moment, the woman disappeared from view, only to reappear between the open doors. Then something strange happened. In the hazy, obscured scene beyond the doors, two other women emerged. Both were hunched forward, their muscles straining with visible effort as they struggled to pull a heavy two-wheeled cart out of the greenhouse. The cart must have been loaded with crates, as their movements spoke of an almost animalistic exertion, their bodies laboring under the tremendous weight.
For a moment, the driver doubted his own eyes. Despite the dense vegetation and blurred distance, he thought he saw something disturbingly clear. The two women appeared to be outfitted with bridles in their mouths and harnesses strapped tightly around their bodies, like beasts of burden. The leather straps of the harness pressed into their sweat-drenched shoulders, their taut muscles glistening as they dragged the heavy cart step by agonizing step.
The driver’s heart began to race. For a fleeting moment, he considered looking away, convincing himself that what he saw was merely a trick of the light. But then, one of the women turned her head back, and though the foliage and shadows of the doors obscured her features, it seemed as though she was looking directly at him. Instinctively, the driver took a step back, struggling to make sense of the scene before him.
The two women continued to haul the cart, slowly and laboriously, until the view of them disappeared entirely into the cover of the bushes and the open doors. The driver stood frozen, staring at the spot where he had last seen them. His mind buzzed with unanswered questions, as though overloaded by what he had just witnessed.
“This can’t be… it simply can’t be…” he muttered to himself, yet he couldn’t tear his thoughts away from what he had seen. Were those women truly wearing bridles and harnesses? Or was it just the shadows of the greenhouse playing tricks on him?
Deep down, however, he felt certain that it wasn’t an illusion. There was a darker truth lurking in these women’s lives—something that went beyond the harshness of their labor or the boss’s cruelty. And the sight wasn’t just disturbing; it was hauntingly familiar, as though some long-forgotten story had come to life before his eyes.
